L'ingresso della marchesa in una Ferrara nebbiosa e funestata dalla peste non destò quegli entusiasmi e quei festeggiamenti in occasioni così importanti. Parisina era bellissima e molto giovane, però anche se quasi quindicenne, manifestò una cultura e una preparazione al nuovo ruolo che attirò subito consensi e benevolenza da tutta la Corte Estense. Abbellì con oculatezza il Castello, loro sede abituale e dove organizzò nella torre del Rigobello, sotto la biblioteca, il proprio appartamento, da cui vedeva la bellissima piazza della Cattedrale.
Ugo figlio del duca non vedeva di buon occhio la matrigna la riteneva responsabile della caduta in disgrazia della madre Stella de Tolomei, quasi coetaneo di Parisina venne costretto dal padre a recarsi a Ravenna con la moglie a trovare i parenti durante il viaggio e la permanenza in tale città, il gelo si dissolse e i loro sentimenti si manifestarono senza reticenze o pudore. Al loro ritorno la relazione continuò e si rafforzò nel segreto degli incontri nelle varie "Delizie"di Belfiore, Fossadalbero e Quartesana.
Ma questo amore nascosto e proibito causava in Parisina malumore e insofferenza che si manifestava anche nei confronti del personale di servizio, un'ancella ritenutasi ingiustamente maltrattata fu delatrice della tresca. Giunte tali indiscrezioni all'orecchio del duca, incredulo praticò un foro nel pavimento del proprio studio situato sopra la camera della moglie e quando si rese conto di persona del tradimento, ordinò alle guardie di arrestarli e di imprigionarli in due celle distinte del castello.
Non servirono a nulla le suppliche dei cortigiani per tentare di salvare la vita ai due giovani furono entrambe decapitati, ponendo fine al loro amore che, tuttavia, è durato nei secoli ispirando musicisti e poeti.

"Nicholas III of Este, Marquis of Ferrara, married Parisina Malatesta of Ravenna in 1418. From the beginning this story wasn’t carried out with fate favour. The entrance of new marquise, in a misty and flailed by plague Ferrara, wasn’t celebrated with the enthusiasm and the usual events of important occasions.
Parisina was beautiful, very young and nevertheless her age, manifested a culture and a preparation for the new role that immediately attracted support and goodwill from all the Este Court Este. The Palace was cured with flair and the new marquise apartment organized in the tower of Rigobello (ducal palace), under the library, from there was visible the beautiful square of the Cathedral. On the beginning Ugo of Este, son of the Marquis, did not give his favour to the Marquise, she was believed responsible to replace his mother Stella de Tolomei. Ugo, almost coeval of Parisina, was forced by his father to go to Ravenna with his wife to find relatives, during the trip and stay in this city, the ice between them was dissolved and their feelings expressed without hesitation or shame. On their return, the relationship continued and developed secretely with meetings in the various "Delizie" (sort of countryside villa and fortress of Este family) Belfiore, Fossadalbero and Quartesana. But this hidden and prohibited love caused in Parisina moodiness and intolerance which was manifested also against her staff, one of her servaints unfairly treated, as revenge, denounced the fact. Rumours soon came under attention of Marquis Nicholas, that unbelieving this facts, practiced a hole in the floor of his studio located above the room of his wife to clear the situation. When he realized betrayal was true, lovers were under arrest in two separate jails of the castle for high treason and betrayal against the state. Supplications of courtiers an population didn’t save life of the two young lovers. They were both beheaded in a tower of the Castle, killing off their love, although lasted over the centuries, inspiring generations of poets and musicians.
